Do you think roller skating sounds tame?
Go talk to the women of Energetic City Roller Derby Association – they'll show you the way.
The ECRDA is looking for fresh meat.
Dressed in fishnets and short skirts, the women of the ECRDA told a group of women how they got into the sport and showed videos of roller derby bouts to entice more women into joining at their recruitment meeting at Maximum Fitness Wednesday.
There was a resounding “do it!” from the current local derby girls when asked why others should join.
“Do it now, while we’re all still learning because it’s only going to get harder,” said Twyla Jordan, aka Twilight Carnage.
The girls said derby is a sport for misfits.
“(I) wanted a sport that I’d fit in. There’s not a whole lot of sports out there that want a 42-year-old to play,” said Kathy Kruk, aka Lady Razer.
“You work hard, you play hard, everybody gets along and you get to take out all your aggressions from everyday life.”
Most of the derby girls started in the sport in February and there were all skill levels – from experience derby girls to women who had never been on roller skates before.
“Any walk of life, any shape, size, age and athletic ability, it doesn’t matter. As long as you can walk and your doctor says it’s ok. It’s a lot of fun,” said Tiffany Sasges, aka Barracuda Betty.
Added Jordan: "You fall down and everybody cheers for you."
And it's also a workout that doesn't seem like one, and doesn't involve dragging yourself to the gym.
The ECRDA practices at the Enerplex Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., until the ice goes in mid-August, when they move to the North Peace Arena, until the ice goes in there. They are currently looking for a space to practice in during the winter.
The ECRDA is always looking for more volunteers ranging from referees, officials to point trackers and just general help. It takes a minimum of 50 people to host a bout. The ECRDA is also looking for sponsors.
