Kalmor won the A division in the Mixed Slow Pitch Year End Tournament on Sunday, defeating the Tigers 12-6 in the final.

The Fort St. John Mixed Slow Pitch Year End tournament wrapped up last weekend with intense play and good spirits.

Kalmor were the big winners on the weekend, defeating the Tigers 12-6 in their final match to win the A division.

Kalmor player Jason Atkings said his team came from behind all season, and Sunday was no different.

“It was just the same thing we were doing all year. We started a little bit slow, but there’s something about this team. We’re always able to come back in the sixth or seventh inning. We’ve done it all year and it worked again today.”

Teammate Cyril Mills agreed, saying his team was never down mentally, even if they were down on the scoreboard.

“We all came together and just pulled it off. We’re extremely happy with the win.”

Atkings added that this was one of the biggest turnouts for numbers of teams that he’s seen in his 16 years in the league.

In the B division final, Emco F.A.I.T. and Ikons squared off for a total of three games. F.A.I.T. took the first one in 10 innings – three more than usual – but the Ikons rallied for an 8-7 win in their next meeting to force a third and deciding game.

Like Kalmor, the Ikons showed comeback spirit and took the third game 7-5, winning the B division.

“It was really tough,” said Ikons player Marc Beerling. “The first game with them we lost, so we had to come back and beat them twice. They were all tough games and really close. It was a totally fun weekend, really hot and really fun.”

His team has been reigning champs of the B division since 2008.

“I guess it’s a little bit lucky and a little bit good maybe,” he laughed. “It’s awesome. I’m really proud of the whole team. That last game especially, we played really solid defense and the bats were really working well for us.”

The Pirates won the C division, slaughtering Tim-Br Mart Tools 18-4. Pirates player Dustin Sall said his team’s offense took over.

“Our bats were on. It’s a hitting game. We had a pretty good all around game today.”

He said the weekend was a good time.

“It was a great experience, very fun. The weather was great, and it’s just fun to get out and play ball.”

The crowds that came out were surprisingly large, filling the stands for both the A and B divisions, and everyone seemed to leave in good spirits, winning or not.
