Mud flew and tires spun at the Taylor Speedway last weekend for the year’s final event.
Final winners for 2010 were Kevin Beebe in IMCA Modified, Aaron Tubbs in Mini Senior, Just Tackaberry in Mini Junior, and Devon Beebe in Mini Sprint.
John Beaumont Jr. won Saturday’s IMCA Modified division race. He said he got on the track at the perfect time.
“We got on the track when it was the best it could be, right after the intermission. I got a good position off the start and it was just luck of the draw from there.”
He said Sunday’s always a better day for racing as the track is firmer. John Stokes won the IMCA Modified division on Sunday.
Sportsman driver Ron McNabb, affectionately nicknamed “Loop-out” by his peers after Saturday’s races, explained why he lost control of his vehicle twice in the same race.
“The car just went loose on me. It was all on one corner. I went around the others no problem, came into that one same speed, same line and everything and just lost it. I couldn’t get it back.”
His trouble on the track provided entertainment for the other racers though.
“If it makes a good show, that’s all that matters,” he laughed.
Dave Brown won Saturday's Sportsman class with McNabb winning Sunday's.
The most exciting race of the weekend was easily the Calvin versus Richard Hildebrand battle for sibling supremacy in the Bombers class on Saturday. They were the only two on the track for the race, which resulted in a neck-and-neck fight the whole way through.
The brothers were bumping and leaning on each other the whole way, with the final lap showing an exciting leapfrog display of Richard taking the lead around the third corner and then Calvin speeding past him at the last second to win it. He beat his brother by about half a car length in the end, and then won the Bombers class again on Sunday.
Tubbs won Saturday's Mini Sprints with Cora Lee Krahn winning on Sunday.
Tackaberry won Saturday's Mini Junior division with Jordie Hildebrand winning on Sunday.
Beebe won the Mini Sprints on Saturday with Jason Cote winning on Sunday.
Beaumont Jr. said car counts and attendance have been down this season, and he hopes it picks up next year.
“We need some more positive advertising. It’s a bad year because of the economy being down, making the car count a little low. I’m hoping next year we get a fresh start and some new faces.”
He said Fort St. John’s hardworking lifestyle makes getting these events going a challenge.
“Everybody works hard, and when work calls you’ve got to go. Fort St. John is an on-call community and it seems like everybody has to work all the time.”
People should come and check it out if they haven’t before, he added.
“It’s competitive, and when everything works out it’s very exciting. A lot of people work hard in volunteering to make this event work.”
