No Box class competitors roar down the strip during the Big Cash Race at the Northern Lights Raceway on Sunday.

There was a big turnout for the Big Cash races at the Northern Lights Raceway on Sunday.

Drag racers from as far away as Edmonton and Kitimat came to Fort St. John to compete.

“That was pretty exciting to see some out of towners come up, I think it bumped up the level of competition a notch or two, it’s good to see,” said Fort St. John Drag Racing Association vice president Bryan Bates.

“Compared to other races, I guess the fact that we got some people from far away to come to this race. Fort St. John is not the closest place to anywhere so it’s nice to have people come out from a long ways away just to come to our track.”

Saturday’s King of the Hill was completely rained out, but the fog cleared off on Sunday morning for an exciting day of races, which lasted into the late afternoon.

Bobby Bailey beat out Elton Hagen to win the No Box category.

“It’s my brother’s car, he decided to let me run it this weekend so I thought perfect. I come up every weekend with my old man anyways. I thought I’d come and run it and it just so happened that things went my way and I won,” said the Beaverlodge, Alta.
resident.

“It was awesome, good classes, good racers out there. I see a lot of them everywhere and it’s awesome to line up against those guys, they’re very competitive and good racers so it’s definitely an honour to join them and race next to them, let alone win.”

Michael Dixon won the Pure Street category in the first race since putting his motor together.

“It went pretty good. the car ran great, the races kept going smooth, so it was pretty basic,” he said, adding that everything went right, with a little bit of luck.

Greg McLellan beat Cody Liwiski for the win in the Box division. McLellan said there was some stiff competition.

“Lots of it there that’s for sure, there always is in the box category,” said the Grande Prairie racer.

Madison Morton won Sunday's Junior Dragster class over runner-up Jordan Patterson.

Shannon Franke won the Bike/Sled class over Greg Morton.

Sept. 11 and 12 will be Season Ending Points Race at the Northern Lights Raceway. For more information, check out www.northernlightsraceway.ca.
