Local figure skaters are shaking off the rust at the Fort St. John Figure Skating Club Camp at the Enerplex this week.
The skaters have are on the ice next week too, trying to prepare for the season.
Kelowna instructor Steve Muff is back for a third year to help train the girls on their jumping. He uses a video camera and a lap top on the ice to show the athletes where they go wrong and immediately correct them.
“He looks if you’re not standing up straight, if you don’t have the proper positions he goes and he shows you on the video what you’re doing wrong,” said FSJFSC member Carlee Shenton.
FSJFSC skater Whitney Jarratt said it’s cool to be able to see what they’re doing wrong right on the ice.
“The next time you just say ‘ok I’m going to try and fix it’ and see if you can make it better,” she said.
Muff said the skaters don’t look too bad for the start of the season.
“They’re all taller and a lot stronger too [than last year], so the jumps are a lot higher and some of these basic positions that I’ve been doing are a lot stronger. Seeing some progress for sure.”
The skaters are working on their H position, which is an open position and the D position, which is what they use to rotate while they jump.
Skaters also get to try out a special harness when they’re close to landing new jumps.
“You get the feeling of the weight and the height and how you’re supposed to feel because then you can’t fall,” said FSJFSC skater Sage Kjos.
“It feels really cool because it’s almost like you’re jumping on a really bouncy trampoline. It’s helped me try and get my positions better.
She has participated in other camps around the province taught by Muff and said she feels comfortable trying her axles with him.
"He is a really cool instructor and I hope he keeps coming back."
FSJFSC coach Jennifer Hammond said it’s going to be a rebuilding year for the club as the numbers are down.
“We’re just trying to bring up the little ones and just rebuild a really strong club again, which I think we absolutely can, we have the parents and the volunteers to be able to, we just have to be able to work together,” she said.
The FSJFSC skaters will go to their first competition of the season in Williston at the end of October.
