We are so lucky to be living in a community that can boast about having a brand new hospital! It is a beautiful facility that cost more than $300m, of which the Province funded $298m. People often tell me that we donít receive enough in return dollars from the Province, but this is one of many things in which we did! Our hospital staff must be congratulated on a very successful move into the new hospital. Letís just think about this for a second: they moved all of the patients, and some of the equipment from the old hospital into the new; installed all new beds in the new residential care facilities; installed all new furniture into the new hospital and residential care areas; and moved all of our loved ones from the old care facility into the new ones, and did all this in less than one week! I, for one, think this was an amazing accomplishment!
This move, from an old hospital that we were very comfortable with, into a new facility that we are all just getting used to, is obviously going to create a few issues for our doctors, nursing staff, administration staff, and of course, for you. My office is receiving a few complaints about doors that are too heavy, doors that have locks on them so you must get a staff person to let you out; doors where there shouldnít be doors; areas that are not readily accessible to the handicapped; doctors parking lot with no plug-ins and needed additional accesses for doctors into the facility in certain areas. Iíve even heard that we are losing some doctors and nurses because of these issues. Our concerns are not falling on deaf ears. Last week I voiced the concerns that Iíd been hearing, to our Northern Health officials, and they invited me to take a tour of the hospital with them, and the new operators of the facility. As we walked through the hospital, they showed me the things that were causing concern, and told me about the remedies they were working on to rectify these issues.
The point I want to leave you with is that there a lot of folks that are working very hard to insure the new hospital is the best and most user-friendly possible, for our residents and staff. This will be a great hospital Ė we have great doctors, nursing staff, support personnel and administrative staff all working to improve our lives, so letís cut them a little slack, and give them an opportunity to work the bugs out!
