Active case of COVID-19 declined noticeably but one more death from the virus was recorded in Northern Health, an update issued Wednesday by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control was showing.

As of midday Wednesday, there were 285 active cases in the region, a drop of 49 from the day before. Hospitalizations also decreased, to 30 from 39, but patients in intensive care rose by two to 11.

The death was among three recorded across the province and raised the total for Northern Health to 101 since the pandemic broke out. For B.C., the count grew to 1,317.

"We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones to COVID-19," provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement.

The rate of new cases also appears to be heading in the right direction. As of Tuesday, the seven-day rolling average for Northern Health stood at 33.4 per day, compared to a peak of 45.7 on Feb. 12. Likewise, for B.C., it was 410.3, down from 435.6 on Feb. 12. Vancouver Coast was the only region where the curve was not bending downward or flattening as of Tuesday. There, the rate stood at 106.4, up from 97.6 as of Feb. 12.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on all of us, but with kindness, compassion and care for those around us, we will see it through," Henry and Dix said.

"Keeping our communities and each other strong is about taking care of our physical health and mental well-being, and supporting those around us to do the same.

"Most people in B.C. are doing the right thing, and we encourage everyone, in turn, to support friends and family to also continue to take precautions in their daily lives. It is not only our individual efforts that make the difference, but the power of all of us working together that helps break the chains of transmission."
