Arts endowment honours the late Sue Popesku

The Fort St. John Arts Council is planning an arts endowment fund to honour the legacy of Sue Popesku.

Popesku, one of the city's most esteemed and prominent community builders, died Sunday, April 19, at the age of 72. The fund would be named after Popesku in recognition of her accomplishments and commitment to keeping arts alive and thriving in both Fort St. John and the greater Peace region.

“We’re looking at an endowment fund that would encompass a creative space in the future and also scholarships,” said Arts Council President Rosemary Landry. “The endowment would give us a little more flexibility in how to honour her.”

The Arts Council represents some two dozen member groups, from the film society to the art gallery to dance, choir, and theatre groups, school band programs, and more, and which are contributing toward the creation of the fund.

Popesku was cremated Wednesday, and a private family ceremony is planned for this summer, said her husband Sorin. A Celebration of Life is also being planned by arts groups for when the COVID-19 crisis resolves.

Landry said the Arts Council has been considering the creation of a multipurpose space for some time, with pottery, spinning and weaving, quilting, dancing, and art classes. An ideal spot could be the Canadian Tire building when it moves locations, she said, but would require assistance from the city.

“The Cultural Centre is a wonderful spot, but it’s really for performing,” said Landry, noting many local arts groups are running low on space.
