Another 1,700 jobs were added in northeast B.C. in August, dropping regional unemployment to 7% — the lowest in all of B.C. .
There were 37,100 employed and 2,800 unemployed last month, according to Statistics Canada estimates released Sept. 4.
The northeast had the lowest unemployment rate reported in B.C. for August, with the Lower Mainland Southwest reporting the highest at 12.3 %, followed by the North Coast and Nechako at 12.2 %
The region has seen 3,500 jobs return since the spring economic restart; 1,800 jobs were added in July. Between March and June, the region lost 5,400 jobs because of COVID-19 pandemic and economic lockdown.
This time last year there were 39,600 employed and 2,300 unemployed, with unemployment at 5.5%.
Provincially, B.C. added 15,300 jobs in August, with unemployment down to 10.7%.
Canada added 246,000 jobs, with national unemployment falling to 10.2%.
B.C.’s biggest gains in August were seen in manufacturing (+6,000 jobs); accommodation and food services (+6,400 jobs); agriculture (+6,600 jobs); and other services, except for public administration (+10,400 jobs).
The forestry, fishing, mining, and oil and gas sector added 1,500 jobs, and construction added 3,900.
While the province added jobs overall last month amidst the pandemic, losses were felt in wholesale and retail trade (-10,400 jobs); professional, scientific and technical services (-10,800); and information, culture and recreation (-6,000 jobs).
Full-time jobs accounted for 13,300 of the total job gains, while part-time work accounted for 2,000 jobs — a sign of healthy recovery owing to the more stable nature of full-time work.
Northeast unemployment was at 39,000 in March. There were 2,500 job lost in April, another 2,200 in May, and 700 in June.
