The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) has heard residents’ concerns about the deteriorating Baldonnel Road and says it's working towards a solution.

Last month, roughly 30 Baldonnel residents came together at Baldonnel Elementary to discuss the poor state of the road, which has been getting worse since a gravel pit started operations in the area.

Getting the ministry involved in working towards a fix was one of their
objectives.

The Ministry “is aware of the increased commercial truck traffic on Baldonnel Road,” Sonia Lowe, a spokesperson with MOTI, said in an email.

Lowe says the ministry has undertaken additional grading along Baldonnel Road, which totals 260 kilometres, and has placed gravel on the road surface areas where soft spots were developing.

Additionally, “calcium was applied to the road to reduce dust,” Lowe said.

Looking ahead, the ministry has committed to work with the gravel pit operator to get a sense of its projected use of the road, and the scale of their operations, Lowe said.

“We will implement a plan to ensure the road is maintained and upgraded as required, to ensure a good, safe travel condition is in place for all road users,” she said.
