Before you grab that axe and head out to the bush to get a Christmas tree, you need to get a permit, the province says.

"British Columbians interested in cutting their own Christmas tree should obtain their permit online or contact their local district or FrontCounter BC office," the province said in a release.

There, you will receive information about specific cutting requirements and approved harvest areas.

"Free use permits are provided for personal use only," the province says. "Selling a tree cut under a Christmas tree permit or cutting in an unauthorized area is illegal."
