Indigenous students from Northeast B.C. share in Irving K. Barber awards

Eleven Indigenous students from the Peace region and Fort Nelson have received scholarships to support their post-secondary schooling.

The Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society announced Wednesday more than $1.8 million in Indigenous Student Awards, started in 2007 to remove barriers to higher education.

Receiving a Masters/Doctoral studies award of $5,000 is Brettany Makuch of Fort St. John, who is studying at the University of Northern BC.

Receiving undergraduate awards ($1,000-$2,500) are:

Dawson Creek

  • Summer Supernant, College of New Caledonia

  • Reiley Terbasket, University of BC Okanagan

Doig River First Nation

  • Danielle Harkey, Simon Fraser University

Fort Nelson

  • Harlen Bertrand, Capilano University

Fort St John

  • Tiffany Spahan, Northern Lights College

  • Sage Birley, University of Victoria

  • Madison Van Will, Vancouver Island University

Hudson's Hope

  • Brooklyn Howard, University of Northern BC

Moberly Lake

  • Layne Labby, Northern Lights College

  • Ashley Watson, Thompson Rivers University

There were 612 students who were awarded this year.

The Indigenous population in B.C. is growing at more than triple the rate of the non-Indigenous population, with nearly 45% under the age of 25, the Society said.
