Northeast B.C. unemployment rises to 9.4%

Unemployment rates in Northeast B.C. jumped back over 9 per cent in September. According to Statistics Canada’s monthly Labour Force Survey released Oct. 7, unemployment climbed to 9.4 per cent last month after three months of slight declines.

Unemployment rates in Northeast B.C. jumped back over 9 per cent in September.

According to Statistics Canada’s monthly Labour Force Survey released Oct. 7, unemployment climbed to 9.4 per cent last month after three months of slight declines.

The region continues to have the highest unemployment in B.C., with the Kootenay region not far behind at 8.5 per cent.

According to the survey, there were 38,300 people employed in the region in September, down from the 39,200 employed in August.

B.C.'s overall unemployment rate sat at 5.8 per cent for the month of September. There were 49,500 people employed in forest, fishing, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas last month, down 3.1 per cent from 51,100 employed in August.

Nationally, Canada added 67,200 jobs in September, mostly in part-time and self-employed work, with national unemployment remaining at seven per cent.
