Small business owner Claudette Huber picked the right week a year ago to hang her Happy Hobbit Curios shingle and open up shop – she celebrates the store's one year anniversary Saturday during small business week in the Mile 0 City.
“I would find myself searching for this type of store when I was travelling, and I thought, ‘why can’t we have one here?'”
She says this was the trigger and motivation more than five years ago.
“Each spring would roll around and I would wonder if this was the year. 2016 was the time.”
She says it is important to build the community as a business with more than simply retail sales.
“It is about more than shelf space, it is about programming and adding to the community,” noting a handful of readers and others have had community sessions in the shop.
An open house is slated go Saturday morning from 10 to 5pm with cake, door prizes, and an oracle on hand to read for those who drop by.
