Here we go.

Dawson Creek powerlifter Aljohn Macam took 3rd place in his class at the Alberta Powerlifting Union Provincials 2023 in Calgary on June 10.

Lifters are required to record a certain total (weight) at a local meet to qualify for Provincials, which Macam was able to do during his second powerlifting meet last year. The APUP meet was Macam’s fourth competition to date.

“I started powerlifting three years ago when a couple of friends influenced me to start going to the gym and one of them later on suggested I try powerlifting,” says Macam.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the sport of powerlifting has grown immensely and evidence of that is in the record number of athletes competing in this year’s Alberta Provincials.

Macam's total was 570 KG. Squat of 215 KG, Bench Press of 120 KG and Deadlift of 235 KG.

“We were told over 200 athletes were going to be competing."

“Powerlifting and competing has helped me both mentally and physically. I developed skills and habits I didn’t think I was capable of 5 years ago. I’m also fortunate to be surrounded by supportive family and friends. I also wouldn’t be able to train and compete at this level without the support of local businesses that support athletes like me,” he adds.
