Sing Tao Media Group Canada – owner of Metro Vancouver’s largest Chinese-language newspaper, Sing Tao Daily – has a new CEO and leadership team.

Effective April 1, Anson Wong is the group’s new CEO, after the previous CEO and president, Calvin Wong, announced his retirement.

The company also announced the appointment of individuals to other leadership roles, including Lelia Leung as the general manager for the Western Canada region, based in Vancouver.

“My priority is to produce good, quality content for our users in a timely manner, and at the same time help local businesses to promote their businesses,” Wong told BIV.

Under the new leadership team, Wong said the company will continue to grow its digital news products, with a focus on local news. The company’s flagship newspaper, Sing Tao Daily, stopped its print edition last August, after 44 years of business in Canada.

“The time is really interesting right now with so much misinformation out there.…We feel that we are ever more important. By suspending the newspaper operation, we could focus all our resources on better delivery on the digital front and better investigative report,” said Wong.

“And we are committed to reporting local stories – what's happening in our neighbourhood, things that are relevant to local residents.… I want to bring some power back to all the local events, like community events, charities, etc.”

Wong, who moved to Canada in 1991, started his career as an anchor for CHIN radio and joined Sing Tao Media Group’s A1 Chinese Radio in 2008, before becoming the company’s general manager and vice-president of business ventures in 2019.

Sing Tao Media Group, which also runs fashion magazine EliteGen and lifestyle website CCUE.ca, is jointly owned by the Canadian publishing group Torstar Corp., parent company of The Toronto Star as the major owner, and the Hong Kong-based Sing Tao News Corp. as a minority owner.
