The coronavirus couldn’t cancel birthday celebrations for Seth Ryan of Fort St. John on Wednesday.
Family and friends dressed up their vehicles and treated him to an unforgettable parade past his home for his 14th birthday, filling the street with cheers and honks and music, and handing out gifts as they drove by.
Seth shares his birthday with his uncle Joe Cletheroe, and they normally celebrate together with a big family gathering, with all the grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins.
But with gatherings limited and the need for social distancing heightened amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, mom Jody Ryan assembled the surprise parade instead. Family and friends gathered at the west end of the block and rolled by as a convoy at 4 p.m.
“He was pretty bummed this year that he couldn’t have anybody over to spend his day with,” she said. “I messaged our family and friends from our church and the youth group to come by for a birthday parade to show that even though we couldn’t have a party, that he could celebrate in style.”
