"Due to the impact of COVID-19, our schedule to various regional markets has been adjusted to reflect the reality of significantly reduced travel," Air Canada said in a statement. "While we’re planning this to be a temporary suspension, we continue to review and adjust the schedule as required."

Flights could still be booked from Fort St. John through WestJet and Central Mountain Air as of Wednesday morning.

Air Canada said Monday it will temporarily lay off 16,500 employees starting this week as the airline struggles with fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective this Friday, the layoffs of 15,200 unionized workers and 1,300 managers will last through April and May amid drastically reduced flight capacity from the Montreal-based airline.

The company said it will reduce capacity for the second quarter by 85% to 90% compared to last year.

This is a developing story.
