The Fort St. John Hospital Foundation started the new year last week with an $11,800 donation from Fort Motors.
The funds were raised through a new partnership between the two organizations, with $100 from every retail vehicle sold in November and December going toward the Foundation and its Be An Angel campaign.
Fort Motors had previously sponsored the Foundation's campaign mailout, but was able to raise three times that amount with the new initiative, said General Manager Mark Shantz.
"We felt there was something a little more we could do as far as doing something that surrounded the whole sales team, the whole dealership, and make sure that everybody was involved to give a bigger number," Shantz said.
The funds will allow the Foundation to buy medical equipment that's in the greatest need at the hospital. Fort Motors had hoped to raised at least $10,000 through the campaign, and was impressed to beat it. Supporting the hospital helps to support everyone from kids to seniors, Shantz said.
"Everybody is going to need it and use it sometime in their stay here, so we feel it's very important to support that," Shantz said.
Niki Hedges, the Foundation's executive director, said the partnership with Fort Motors was a new element of the Be An Angel campaign, which beat its $250,000 fundraising goal. The Foundation was able to secure a new sponsor for the campaign mailout materials at the same time creating a new fundraising initiative with the business community, she said.
"What's exciting about what Fort Motors has done is that it is reviewing past giving and ways of giving," Hedges said. "As sponsors for the mailout, they came up with a fresh idea and that meets the culture of this business. It's been really exciting."
