Council committee to review COVID-19 donations

Fort St. John city councillors have struck a new committee to determine what to do with corporate and community donations that come in during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move was prompted at Monday’s meeting after NorthRiver Midstream approached council wanting to contribute $10,000 to the community.

“I know that there’s a lot of funds out there that are looking at releasing money to our non-profit organizations for COVID, significant money,” said Mayor Lori Ackerman.

“This could be the only donation, it could be one of many, I don’t know,” Ackerman said.

Couns. Lilia Hansen and Gord Klassen will join Ackerman on the committee, along with city staff.

The committee will review any donations that are offered and determine the best use of the funds. The committee would report back to council for a final decision, Ackerman said.

Coastal GasLink and Petronas have each contributed to the United Way of Northern BC’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. Coastal GasLink donated $100,000 and Petronas donated $50,000.

The United Way says the fund will support the growing needs of seniors in isolation, the homeless, those struggling with mental health and addictions, and others needing food support amidst the COVID-19 emergency in the north.
