Early spring for the Peace?

'I really don't trust the groundhog'

A snow plow with Argo Roads Maintenance clears a section of the South Taylor Hill Feb. 3, 2022. Close to 20 cm fell that night on parts of the Peace.

Depending on who you believe, a weather forecaster who grew up in the region or the groundhog, spring likely won't come to the Peace on March 20.

“I really don't trust the groundhog,” says meteorologist Doug Lundquist, who was raised in Peace River, Alberta.

“I remember coming home from Disneyland in April and it was freezing cold ... I don't have the groundhog weather app, but it was cloudy on the morning of Feb. 2 so that would indicate an early spring. Where I live in Kelowna, there's never six more weeks of winter."

Long-range models for the official start to spring are showing a colder trend, however, “I don't really believe the seasonal forecast this year, I do in other years,” says Lundquist. “Being a La Nina year, the cold weather usually happens in December/January.”

“We are past the worst of it, put it that way. I don't think (below zero temperatures) are completely over,” Lundquist says, but he's confident the -20 and colder dips are done.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, B.C. and Alberta will both enjoy near normal temperatures and average precipitation in March, although there doesn't seem to be anything "normal" about our weather, quips Lundquist, who has family in the Fort St. John area.

“I was in Peace River in the summer. On the valley bottom is was 42. We never got above 32 when I was growing up," he says.

Mind you, there is always the tried and true way of foretelling our changing climate – if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.
