Fort St. John firefighters are in the midst of a fundraising campaign to ensure local kids get a healthy breakfast at school.
Craig Faulkner, vice-president of the Fort St. John Fire Fighter's Charitable Society, says they saw an opportunity to help School District 60’s breakfast program for local elementary schools.
It’s the first time the society has helped with the program, and builds off its success raising funds for medical travel to support residents who need to leave the region for health care.
“It’s something where we saw an opportunity to help out with the schools, and we thought it would be a great way for us to get involved,” Faulkner said. “Obviously with the pandemic, we’ve noticed there’s less travelling happening, so we’ve found out there’s another opportunity to help out within the community as well."
Firefighters held a backpack drive in September to help kids get outfitted for school, and delivered 113 backpacks to the school district to give to students in need.
The breakfast program fundraiser runs until Nov. 5, and firefighters kicked off their efforts with a $2,500 donation.
