Fort St. John RCMP taking COVID-19 precautions

Fort St. John RCMP officers are doing their part to minimize the risk of COVID-19.

The RCMP front counter remains closed as one measure, and you may see officers in the field using gloves, masks, and other personal protective equipment.

Constable Chad Neustaeter emphasizes that the situation is constantly evolving with daily updates and directives, but that officers are still on patrol.

"We're trying to minimize our interactions with the public, but at the same time keep core policing as proactive as possible, to provide the highest level of service we can, while protecting the public and ourselves," said Neustaeter.

With the front counter closed, Neustaeter understands the public may be disappointed in not being able to access non-emergency services, such as fingerprinting and criminal record checks. On the other hand, it protects staff and the public, he said.

"With the community being shutdown, it is very much a response to service," said Neustaeter, adding that "phone policing" has a seen a revival in order to reach residents and avoid exposure.

Social distancing measures have also been put in place at the station, with a heightened focus on cleanliness.

"As soon as we walk in the building, the first thing you do is go wash your hands. There's a sanitizing station and wipes throughout the building," said Neustaeter, adding desks and offices are routinely scrubbed clean.
