Parade float to lift Christmas spirits

What do you do with a parade float when there is no parade?

In light of Fort St. John's cancelled Santa Claus parade, Dave Helton decided to still decorate his own float and parade it around town to boost morale this Christmas season.

Helton realized he could take the parade to the people, as long as Covid-19 protocols were followed and there was no contact with others. He mentioned the idea to Adrian Bueckert, 14, and Kelsey Bueckert, 13, and the kids have been decorating the float and running with the idea.

"I just wanted to help families. It's hard not getting to see your family for Christmas, and I thought this woudl be a nice thing to do for them," said Adrian.

The float isn't completed, but will be revealed this Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., when Helton will drive it around town for two hours. He will do that every night for seven days.

Calvary Baptist Church has lended its nativity scene to use for the float since there will be no Christmas concert this year, while the kids bought decorations from local stores to put on the float.

"It's just a little Christmas gift for Fort St. John, doing what we can to give people a boost," Helton said.

Helton has some fellow drivers that will be joining him with floats of their own on some of the nights.
