Provincial parks remain open, campgrounds closed under new COVID-19 protocols

The province says provincial parks remain open, but visitors will have to follow several new protocols due to COVID-19.

People will be able to hike and recreate in most provincial parks, but services and facilities are suspended for most parks, including all those in the Peace region. Campgrounds will be closed at least until April 30.

"Nature provides the perfect environment to promote health and well-being," said Environment Minister George Heyman said in a statement.

"We are following the advice of the provincial health officer to help people get outside, while ensuring they are following the PHO's direction and guidance to stay healthy. Our government is taking every necessary step to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We look forward to a time when we can return to full operations at our provincial parks."

Suspended services include: visitor centres, washrooms, and day-use facilities. The ministry is encouraging visitors to maintain two metres distance from each other, and to be extra aware of their impact on the environment.

Full provincial park closures will be implemented on a case-by-case basis, the province says.
