As William Shakespeare said, all the world’s a stage — but Stage North is hoping a few people will show up to perform on theirs.
On June 13 and 20, the local theatre company will hold auditions for four stage plays they plan to present between October 2015 and May 2016.
Lisa Behrens, the executive director of Stage North, said that these were the only ones brought to them. Regardless, the four plays represent a wide variety of genres.
Shakespeare’s Macbeth will happen around Halloween. Behrens said that the tale of ambition and murder is very dark, which makes it a good fit for the holiday.
"War of The Worlds," based on the H.G. Wells classic, and inspired by Orson Welles' radio play, will present a radio room during an alien invasion of the Earth. It is scheduled for around New Year’s Eve.
The third play, called, "That Dam Show," is a musical that was written by a former Stage North member in the 1970s. Stage North wants to perform it in March.
“What I’ve been told it’s basically along the lines of building a dam, and that was written around the time that the W.A.C. Bennett Dam was being built here,” she said. “[The director thought] it could be interesting to have it come out in regards to Site C coming in.”
"Unnecessary Farce" is a more modern play involving two undercover police officers and an embezzling mayor. It is scheduled for a May performance.
However, every play needs actors, and Stage North is hoping people come out to audition or do backstage work.
“You’re just going to audition and you will see if you fit into their vision of one of the actors,” said Behrens. “If you’re not wanting to sing and stuff, I’m guessing that you bring that up … you can also say, 'I’d like to audition' for this play, or that play.”
For Behrens, play productions can help form friendships.
Behrens acted in high school and said it helped her “not be so closed off.”
“It’s not hard work,” she said. “Yes, you have to learn a lot of lines as certain roles, but if anyone’s ever gone out to see a play, they can see that the actors and the even the crew behind them are enjoying what they’re doing.”
The auditions will take place at The Space, located at 11520 East Bypass Road, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
