Standing up to bullying for Pink Shirt Day

The 9 a.m. assembly at Robert Ogilvie Elementary School in Fort St. John on Wednesday had talking, singing, dancing and laughing — all with a constant pink accent. That’s because Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day.

Students, teachers, support staff and city councillors gathered, wearing pink, to take a stand against bullying.

“It’s like a sea of pink, it’s pretty neat,” said Councillor Bruce Christensen, who presented the school with an official City Proclamation that it was Pink Shirt Day.

“Bullying is a terrible thing. I think everybody — including somebody who is six foot four — has been bullied at one time,” he said.

He and fellow councillor Gord Klassen were given pink capes and pink masks, making them honourary "upstanders," or those who take a stand against bullying rather than remaining bystanders. The councillors were instructed to take the pink outfits back to City Hall with them.

“The last time I had a cape on I was eight years old, playing Superman,” laughed Christensen.

There was also a performance by 16-year-old Morgan Mara, a nationally recognized dancer who had her own story of bullying, from both the perspective of the bully and the bullied.

The morning ended with some video clips showing how to spot bullying on a day-to-day basis, and then a dance party signaled it was time to go exit the gym back to class.
