Update: The Alaska Highway has reopened to traffic.
Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a head-on collision on the Alaska Highway south of Fort St. John Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to the Swanson Lumber Road intersection to find two pickup trucks involved in the collision, according to a release by Fort St. John RCMP.
RCMP said the westbound vehicle had two occupants, and the eastbound vehicle had only the driver. Emergency crews extracted both drivers, both with serious injuries. The passenger had minor injuries. Paramedics transported all three occupants to hospital for emergency care.
The RCMP Traffic Reconstruction Unit remains on scene and the highway remains closed, RCMP said. Motorists are asked to follow direction of flaggers in the area for a detour route.
DriveBC says a detour is available via the 259 Road to 255 Road. The estimated time of reopening is not available.
RCMP continue to investigate and are asking anyone who may have additional information or dash cam video to contact police by calling 250-787-8100.
