The Fort St John Women’s Resource Society held a food drive September 18 to supply the Society's outreach store with needed items.
Outreach Housing Coordinator Lisa Jewell says the donations are coming at a much needed time, with shelves looking empty.
“I’m really hoping to use this food drive to put the word out in the community that we’re in need,” said Jewell. “Numbers are up, they’re continuing to rise.”
Roughly 500 to 550 people use the store every month, says Jewell, noting many families in town rely on the society.
A printed list will be available for shoppers, to give them an idea of what’s needed. Non-perishable food items are being taken as donations.
A winter coat drive is also launching, with the society looking for toques, hats, mitts, boots, and more. Gear can be dropped off at the society from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Anything warm. The weather’s already starting to get quite cold at night, and we still have people sleeping outside,” said Jewell.
