Plans for this year's Spark conference in Fort St. John may have been cancelled, but organizers still made sure to pay forward its continued support to the Women's Resource Society.
Conference Chair Jennifer Moore delivered a $15,000 cheque to the Society last week, a combination of its annual donation along with contributions from event sponsors Shell Canada and AltaGas.
Demand for the Society's services are increasing while donations decrease due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the much-needed funds will support the organization during these difficult times, event organizers said.
“When we shared our plan to continue to support to the Women’s Resource Society despite our cancellation, then generosity of our sponsors brought me to tear,“ said Moore.
The two-day conference was to take place in May, and has been rescheduled for May 2021.
"The COVID-19 outbreak, and the cancellation of the conference means this support is needed more than ever," said AltaGas President and CEO Randy Crawford. "We are very pleased that together with the conference organizers, our donation will now help the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society to support women in need through these extremely challenging circumstances."
Shell Canada matched Spark's donation for its contribution.
"We believe in supporting the communities near our operations," said Community Liaison Kim Cimini. "In lieu of conference sponsorship, we are pleased to match the SPARK Women’s Leadership Conference’s donation to the Women’s Resource Society and to help the Society continue their important and valuable services within the community, particularly in these uncertain times."
