Write to young Adaura

Friends and family of Adaura Cayford are putting together a pen pal campaign this week to bring her cheer as she continues her fight with cancer.

Adaura's life was turned upside down last summer when she was diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). Surgical removal isn’t an option, and young Adaura has already toughed it through dozens of rounds of radiation.

She's continued her treatments and a search for a cure, but the cancer has moved into her spine and Adaura is currently at home confined to a wheelchair without the use of her legs, her mother Isabelle said.

It's been a challenge to keep spirits high as the family needs to be extra diligent with social distancing in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"She is struggling," says Cayford. "She is very happy that the world stopped for awhile so she has us all to herself! The more she gets the happier she will be!"

Starting on April 15, residents can drop off cards and letters in a bin outside the Canadian Grind coffee shop. They will be held in quarantine until they are safe to deliver.

The family has been home for a month now, and will return to Vancouver in May for the results of her latest MRI, Cayford says.
