Thousands of dollars worth of firefighting equipment stolen near Castlegar

The Merry Creek fire is burning southwest of Castlegar.

Officials are asking for help from the public in tracking down thousands of dollars worth of firefighting equipment stolen from a wildfire site near Castlegar.

According to a news release from the Regional District of Central Kootenay, crews fighting the Merry Creek fire were conducting perimeter checks on Sunday when they noticed gear missing.

“The theft occurred sometime between Saturday, July 10, at 7 p.m., and the early morning of Sunday, July 11,” the news release said.

“The stolen equipment, worth about $2,000, includes over 1,000 feet of forestry hose and six sprinklers. It had been deployed and set up to protect a home in the 500-block of Highway 3.”
