Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band will be the keynote speaker at an upcoming Chamber event celebrating indigenous history and business next week.
The Chamber will host its Creating Energy celebration on June 12. The day includes a tour of the Charlie Lake Cave, also known as T'se K'wa, followed by a traditional meal of bison, salmon, and moose at the Lido.
Louie will deliver is keynote that evening, and "is known for his innovative and progressive business acumen and collaboration with the business sectors which has brought his band to renowned recognition," the Chamber noted in a release.
Louie has been inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame, and is recognized as one of the country's most accomplished indigenous leaders. He's also known for his blunt attitude, and for focusing on economic development to put his people to work. “I’m not looking for handouts. I’m looking for self-sufficiency for my people," he told an audience in Flin Flon, Manitoba, in 2016.
Garry Oker of Doig River First Nation will also share stories at the event on June 12. There will also be drumming. On June 13, the Chamber will hold is BC LNG Hole in One golf tournament.
