Port Coquitlam residents will get first dibs at securing tickets to see some of the best hockey players in the province next month.
Three Western Hockey League (WHL) teams are coming to Jon Baillie Arena inside the PoCo Community Centre (PCCC) in September to play two exhibition games as part of efforts to expand fanbases in non-market communities.
At $11 a pop, tickets will be available at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning (Aug. 12) for hockey fans living in the city, and will go live for the rest of the public on Monday (Aug. 15).
Jon Baillie Arena, which has a 850-seat capacity, is set to accept 750 ticketed spectators for each match-up, and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The 2022-23 preseason games were announced in June by the City of Port Coquitlam and the WHL.
The Vancouver Giants are taking on the Prince George Cougars on Sept. 9, while the second match on Sept. 10 will also include the Cougars, up against Victoria Royals to close out the weekend series.
"Events like this puts PoCo on the map by providing the opportunity to showcase our culture, city, and first-class sporting facility and friendly hospitality to athletes, coaches, officials, guests and spectators," said Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West in an earlier statement.
"The City will provide an unforgettable experience and setting the stage for an event of this magnitude, will showcase what our community has to offer."
Celebrations and a fundraiser
The WHL's showcase is set to nearly mark the one-year anniversary of the PCCC's official opening after the $132-million project — located at 2150 Wilson Ave. — was completed in fall 2021.
Prior to the second game's puck drop (Sept. 10), several celebrations have been scheduled to keep fans entertained.
This includes a McAllister Avenue street party with live music, food and activities between 1 and 6 p.m., and a hockey game that'll pin PoCo firefighters against Coquitlam Mounties at 3 p.m.
A by-donation barbecue will follow the friendly charity match, with all proceeds earmarked for the Port Coquitlam Professional Firefighters Charitable Society.
