It was a dusty day at the motocross races Sunday.
In the third round of the 10-race Peace Motocross Association schedule, hundreds of riders flocked to the hilly, twisty and forested area just off the Alaska Highway.
Tim Doll of Fort St. John took second in the moto2-125 Int/Ep#1 with six laps in 14 minutes 41.128 seconds and said it was a great day of competition at the Fort St. John Motocross Track.
"I had battles in all my races, the whole race from start to finish, lots of people to race with," he said.
Doll hopes to race not only in the Peace Region this summer, but also in the Alberta provincial series. He will be in Raymond, Alta. for amateur nationals July 1 to 4.
High winds and dry conditions made the track tough to race on Sunday. Doll said he was probably about four seconds slower in his motos than on a good race day.
Dave Mouat won the junior vet category Sunday and only raced in the one category due to the difficult conditions, especially in the morning.
"Going up to jump you can't see whether there's somebody down, it's just a dust cloud and you do the jump through the dust," he said.
Clouds of dust not only swirled around the track, but frequently covered the crowd of spectators as racers continued their jumps and heavy landings.
Originally from Vancouver Island, this was Mouat's first PMA race and he said he found the dry and hard conditions of the track very similar to what he's used to in Nanaimo.
"I find I'm not used to the wind and on the jumps the wind bothered me, but it wasn't too bad today. It's definitely challenging, it's smooth, it flows good. I find I'm always turning, the lanes always are turning so it's hard on me, it's a good workout."
The smallest racers of the day competed in the 50cc. Seven-year-old Rain Odd competed in the category and said she had fun, "I jumped once," she said excitedly after picking up her participation trophy.

PMA racing will continue in Dawson Creek on June 20 and finish in Beaverlodge on September 12. For more information on PMA racing, visit out www.pma.ab.ca.
