The Dawson Creek Gun Show continues to make quite a bang in the Canadian West.

The annual show began 33 years ago, and, since then, has become one of the biggest such events in western Canada.

It has grown to the point where over 200 tables have been booked for the show this weekend and has become bigger than some of the shows in the major centres.

"We have grown by 20 per cent over last year. We have 205 tables booked. We have filled the curling rink. I am shocked how much it has grown from last year to this year," said Brenda Mathias, one of the key organizers of the popular show.

That works out to about 80 exhibitors displaying their wares - and it's not just firearms that are on display or up for sale. The show has long since expanded into an outdoors show. There certainly is no shortage of hunting rifles, but there are also many other exhibitors displaying and selling everything from fishing gear to quads to camouflage clothing to beef jerky.

"There are lots of firearms, but there are also optics, antler carvers, archery and knives. There's a huge variety."

The Kamloops and Calgary shows are probably larger than the Dawson Creek show, estimated Mathias, and she isn't sure how large the Vancouver show is, but the size of the local show has probably surpassed or is close to surpassing Edmonton's.

"We are one of the largest, for sure. My exhibitors tell me that they do better here than they do in a lot of the other centres. When people go to a gun show here they go because they are seriously interested in what is there and not just because they are looking for something to do for an afternoon."

The show at the city's curling rink is open Saturday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., and it costs a mere $5 for admission.

There are also a couple of popular raffles including one for a $750 shopping spree and three other prizes and another raffle for a lady's diamond ring.
