Tyler Helmig did everything right, nothing wrong and was perfect in all four nights of racing during the Mile Zero Chuckwagon and Chariot Derby.

The 48-year-old Helmig capped off the Western Chuckwagon Association show Sunday night with the fastest time to win the aggregate prize.

Driving off the No. 1 barrel in the fifth and final race, Helmig got to the rail early and outran Lane Kimble, Nathan Sales and Rod Salmond to the cheers of the 400 fans who gathered to see the association's 20 wagons race.

"That barrel one turn that I made tonight, I say give me that barrel turn in Calgary any day, and I will make money off that turn. That outfit is really starting to run and come together. They started hard. Halfway down the backstretch I just spoke to them and never even touched a horse. They went down the track with more gears to grab and they were wanting more. That was a really good feeling to finish with here," said Helmig, who is a former World Professional Chuckwagon Association driver.

Helmig was the fastest all four nights. Initially, it was thought that Nathan Sales had the fastest time Thursday to open the races, but after a review he was assessed a two-second wagon interference penalty and Helmig took the top spot with a time of 1:16:88, after Sales was knocked down to fourth place with a time of 1:18:15.

Helmig followed that with three more first-place performances: a 1:17:75 Friday night, a time of 1:17:13 Saturday and his 1:17:84 Sunday.

The 20 WCA wagons will be back for five nights of racing during the Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Exhibition.

The organization visits Peace Country tracks, but had a quiet June and decided to put on four nights of racing in Dawson Creek.

The next WCA race is July 1 in Rio Grande.
