Canada’s best up and coming youth speed skaters take to the ice in Fort St. John this weekend for the national long track championships.

The Canadian Championships take place Feb. 4 and 5, and will see more than 120 skaters compete in two days of individual and team events to cap off their season.

Competition starts Saturday with a 500-metre Olympic start, and on Sunday with a seven-lap mass start.

The Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club is organizing this year's event, the first time it's been hosted here in the city since 2012.

It’s also the second time a national competition has been held in Fort St. John this year. The Elks were host to the first Long Track Canada Cup of the season in December.

The club also hosted the BC Long Track Speed Skating Championships in January, where three young Elks were named to Team BC for this weekend’s meet.

All events are being held at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, and are open to the public to attend.
