You may have heard of Stars on Ice but what about Studs on Ice?
Well, for a number of years the Wapiti Off-Road Association, based in Grande Prairie, has been taking motocross bikes and seeing what happens when you to mix them with ice, as in lake ice.
The result — a great day of excitement, by all accounts.
This coming Saturday, the association is holding its second race day of the season at Charlie Lake, following its opener Jan. 16 at Clairmont Lake north of Grande Prairie.
Local lead organizer Tom DeMaid says the Charlie Lake event has been growing in popularity each year.
“We’re expecting riders (for the first time) from the Edmonton area and Southern Alberta,” says DeMaid. “We’ve also added a third class of racing. So, we’ll have a pro, intermediate, and a beginner's division.”
The size of bikes will range anywhere from 250 to 500 cc with specially made ‘studded’ tires brought in from a supplier in Quebec — “a couple hundred screws in each tire,” says DeMaid. “The traction is really incredible.”
The day will begin with a two-hour registration window beginning at at 7 a.m., a rider's meeting at 9:30, inspections and practice runs at 10, with actual racing scheduled for 11 a.m.
DeMaid believes it will be a full day of racing that could last until 4 or 5 p.m.
