Tri-City connection scores five points in Canada's win over Germany to start 2022 Olympic men's hockey tournament

The men's hockey team opened its Beijing 2022 winter games with a 5-1 win.

Coquitlam’s Ben Street had a goal and an assist while Port Moody’s Kent Johnson had two assists to lead Canada to a 5-1 win over Germany in its opening game of the men’s hockey tournament at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Adam Tambellini, who grew up in Port Moody, also had an assist as Canada led 3-0 after the first period and 4-1 after the middle frame.

Street and Johnson set up the game’s opening goal by Alex Grant after just 4:43 had been played, then Johnson helped set up what proved to be the game-winning goal by Street before the game was 10 minutes old.

Tambellini had the helper on Canada’s fifth goal by Jordan Weal late in the third period.

Maxim Noreau and Daniel Winnik also scored for Canada, which outshot Germany 27-24.

Two local players also made their Olympic debuts with China Thursday (Feb. 10) in an 8-0 loss to the United States.

Goaltender Paris O'Brien, who grew up in Coquitlam, was the backup to starter Shimisi Jieroumi. He's listed by his Chinese name, Youngli Ouban.

Former Coquitlam Express forward Brandon Yip — whose Chinese name is Jinguang Ye — had four shots in just over 22 minutes of ice time.

It’s China’s first appearance in the men’s Olympic hockey tournament with most of its players plucked the country’s only professional team, Kunlun Red Star, that plays in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.

Canada plays the United States on Saturday (Feb. 12). Puck-drop is at 8:10 p.m. PST Friday night (Feb. 11) with the time difference.

China faces Germany later the same day at 12:40 a.m. PST.
