Northern Health is restricting eligibility for passengers using the Northern Health Connections bus service starting this Sunday.

Trips will be limited to people who require accessible transportation, anyone over 60 years old, health care staff, physicians and health care students.

"Bookings on (Northern Health) Connections will be for essential medical appointments only, including (but not limited to) cancer treatment, hemodialysis, and appointments with specialist physicians, primary care physicians; appointments for physiotherapy, dentists, pharmacy, and trips to access a higher level of care such as surgery at a hospital," a statement issued by Northern Health on Friday said.

Also starting on Sunday, the buses will not pick up passengers who have not booked at least 24 hours in advance. Social distancing measures will be taken on board the buses, as necessary.

The Northern Health Connections bus service runs regularly between Prince George and Vancouver, as well as offering service connecting smaller communities along Highway 16 from Prince Rupert to McBride, and from Fort Nelson south, to Prince George.
