The Peace River Regional District has released the following information on the Old Fort landslide:

Emergency Support Services

Regional district staff would like to remind Old Fort residents to stay in contact with Emergency Support Services in Fort St. John for support for their short-term needs. This includes emergency lodgings, food, and rental cars for those with no access to vehicles. All vehicle needs are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Long-term Planning

Planning for medium and long-term needs of residents, including long-term housing, is happening in the Emergency Operations Centre by PRRD staff. Detailed information is being collected from residents about their housing needs. If you have not been in contact recently with PRRD staff about long-term housing needs, phone 250-784-3200.

Recovery of Personal Belongings

The PRRD is creating a plan with the Community Liaison Group to assist residents in retrieving items from their homes and prepare buildings for winter. The Old Fort is still under a strict evacuation order so implementation of the plan depends on how active the slide is. The slide continues to be monitored closely by the geotechnical team of experts who advise the PRRD. Landslides are dangerous and can be unpredictable. As the regional authority, it is our responsibility to consider resident safety first and foremost, which is why we will not allow entry until we are assured by experts that it is absolutely safe to do so. To volunteer yourself or equipment contact the Emergency Operations Centre at 250-784-3200.

Residents’ Meeting

We understand that residents have questions, and we will be holding a Residents’ Meeting this Sunday at 2pm at the North Peace Cultural Centre. For this meeting, we will prepare an update of the current slide situation from the geotechnical experts, hear from Red Cross about evacuee support, as well as medium and long-term planning for housing and vehicles. This meeting will be only for residents of the Old Fort – general public and media will not be attending.

Residents’ Meeting: Sunday, October 14, 2 pm, at the North Peace Cultural Centre.
