Concerned mother

I am a concerned mother. I am grateful that no one has been harmed from the pipeline bombings, but I hear the message. It is an act of desperation, and whether you believe it or not, we are in desperate times.

I am a concerned mother. I am grateful that no one has been harmed from the pipeline bombings, but I hear the message. It is an act of desperation, and whether you believe it or not, we are in desperate times. I believe that the oil and gas industry has acted irresponsibly. In my opinion, they have been neglectful and they need to make some major changes in the way in which they clean up their spills and mistakes. Furthermore, checks and balances and safety measures are not thorough enough to prevent the mistakes from occurring. Some detrimental events are not even considered as mistakes, they are considered just part of the job. I believe people's lives are in danger because of the way the oil and gas industry runs their operations. We need BIG CHANGE to happen now!

The fundamentals of life are being carelessly poisoned. I don't just blame the oil and gas industry. We need clean, fresh water to survive as a species and we are dumping toxins into our rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans. (If you don't believe me take a water sample to a lab). We need clean soil to grow food for human consumption and we either poorly clean up oil spills or dump chemicals (herbicides, pesticides) on the crops, fruit trees, and vegetables. We need food to survive as a species. We need clean air to breathe to survive, but we pollute the air with many different toxins every day.

Are we really that stupid?

Albert Einstein once said something along the lines of this quote, "only two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I am not sure about the universe." I hear you Einstein. I am frustrated by the actions and sometimes lack of action of government and industry. We as a species keep making the same mistakes over and over again throughout history.

We, as a species, are on a suicide mission. The more we poison our environment by polluting the air, water and food, the more we notice that the rate of cancer rises dramatically. Then we scratch our heads and wonder why so many people are getting sick or dying of cancer all around us.Are we really that stupid?

Why are so many of our tax dollars going toward health care? Maybe if we took a step back and looked at the bigger picture we could find better solutions. Maybe if we focused more on the cause and prevention of illness instead of the treatment or cure, we could actually evolve as a species. We are stuck in an illogical rut. An equation that goes something like this: pollute our environment + pollute our bodies = get sick.

Why are so many people depressed? Could it be that deep down we know what we are doing to the planet and to each other, to ourselves, to our children and to future generations. Maybe we feel powerless to stop ... think about what we are doing incorrectly, think about how we can make better choices, and then make the appropriate changes necessary to bring this planet and it's people back to health. We need a wellness plan. We need a change in culture. It all starts in our heads, because deep down I believe most of us feel it already in our hearts. We cannot go on living the way we have. It is not sustainable. It is not logical. Remember the Disney/Pixar movie Monsters Inc.? The writers came up with ways to create power/electricity without harming the children. Why can't we? Most of our present day fuel and electricity production does harm the children via pollution (asthma, cancer, birth defects).

I believe we live in the most beautiful country in the world. I believe we live in the most beautiful province in the world. Let us appreciate the beauty all around us. God, or whoever your higher power might be, gave us this amazing planet Earth to take care of. We are doing a shameful job. I would not be surprised if He took back his promise about the flood and the rainbow and wiped us all out to start fresh with a new set of creatures that are grateful for life and not so greedy, irresponsible, immoral and so downright spoiled rotten.

I am pleading to the oil and gas companies, I am pleading to the B.C. and Canadian Government. Please start cleaning up this mess we have made. Please start making industry responsible for their actions.

I am a concerned mother. I am embarrassed to be a Canadian as I learn about what we are doing to destroy the planet and as I learn what we are not doing to make it right again.

I am not perfect. There are many changes I can do to make this a better world. We all can start making better choices. Let's encourage each other every day to stop being so complacent and start being passionate about what we can do to help the government move this beautiful province of B.C. and this beautiful country in the right direction.

I believe in a clean, green, healthy tomorrow and it starts today. Will you help me prove Einstein's "theory of human stupidity" wrong?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I believe that we can make the changes necessary to make the world a better place.

God, please give the government the courage to make these changes.

God, please give the heads of industry the courage to make these changes.

And please God, will you give the people of Canada the courage to stand up for their health and wellbeing and make it a priority every day.
