"Speaking of Jim hurst. Great pilot ! I flew many miles with Jim , during my time , relief cooking for Pickell construction ..back in the day .. We were in some tight spots , weather wise , but Jim handled every situation , with ease .. I burst with respect , just thinking of the cat, pushing a runway for the Cessna to land . And of us flying / climbing up , up, up. And finally being above the whiteout an seeing the sunshine ...whew !"

"I remember this situation very well. Got a phone call from Sadie Higenbottom the Provincial Emergency co-ordinator for Village of Taylor. Don the railway bridge at Taylor is on fire. This situation is bigger than I can handle! Can I transfer my command to you and your PEP group. By all means I'll need you and your group also. My first phone call direct to Victoria for a Task number. Next getting our emergency response plan into action. BCtel extra phones for command post at BC Assessment office and room for our volunteers. Once put together in minutes I had everyone at my finger tips. Task number means we have everything including Disaster money. Mr Christy at BC Rail. His people radios etc. Many volunteers Okanogan helicopters, Forestry pumps hoses etc Our MLA Tony Brummet and the River Rats to man the forestry Pumps from the river. I was Deputy PEP coordinator and all my training was falling into place like clockwork. This was my biggest situation while with PEP. Our head coordinator James W. Anderson was on vacation at the time of this situation. The fire was too great to extinguish and the creosote-soaked timbers was just left to burn while keeping the fire from spreading and starting a ground or forest fire. This was the biggest event for me and my team while being with PEP."

"I remember when they invited "Joe Engle" seemed such a natural thing to do, to invite an astronaut to FSJ. Rick took Joe on a river trip...he loved it!"
