Dr. Steven Herman, from Duke University in Durham,North Carolina and his colleagues assigned 156 patientsover the age of 50, who suffered from a major depressivedisorder to one of three treatments: GROUP EXERCISETHREE TIME PER WEEK FOR A TOTA L OF 45 MINUTES(ONLY 15 MINUTES PER SESION): medication with Zoloft:or both options.

After four months, the investigators found that allpatients had experienced a significant drop in symptoms ofdepression with very little difference in the therapeuticeffect between the three groups.

Between 60 per cent and 70 per cent of the patients inall groups no longer met the criteria for major depressivedisorder. In a six months follow-up, the team found that thepatients in the exercise group were more likely to continueto be partially or fully recovered than those in the medicationgroup. The authors pointed out that fewer than 10 percent of the exercise patients had relapsed, compared withalmost 40 per cent of the medication patients.

Herman and his colleagues concluded that exercise is aviable and at least equally effective alternative to traditionaltreatment involving drugs. The findings are reported in theJournal of Psychosomatic Medicine.
