Out with the old and in with the new, or out with the new and stick with the old?
When it comes to a coat of arms for the City of Fort St. John, readers have plenty to say, especially on a proposed new design made public last week.
City councillors meet Monday where they will vote whether to approve the new design, go back to the drawing board, or abandon the two-year-old project entirely.
"Not crazy about how the moose and deer are standing. The rest of it is fairly mediocre. Needs a pump jack and maybe some emerald colours to represent the waters of the Peace. Some hills like Monteny, Beatton & Peace. I’d vote: back to the drawing board." — Kate Evans
"The shield on the old coat of arms is beautiful/far better than what is shown on the proposed new coat of arms. I like the concept of adding the moose and deer - but the beaver, paddle, and the thing that doesn’t even look like a ski need to go. The berries aren’t necessary either, and make it too busy. Overall - the new proposed coat of arms is a little tacky. Keep the old coat a arms with a few tweaks." — Ambre Gregoire Sakundiak
"The old one could be improved with some colour, it has all the elements of the new one and is more modern, plus "Opportunity" is better than "Where opportunities flow," which indicates liquid (oil) opportunities for the most part." — Mary Wheat
"Do they have better things to spend time on? How does this add any value to the community? Who will benefit from this?" — Calvin Dempsey
"A fantastic waste of time, effort and public money." — Martin Koldijk
"At first glance, my first thought was... Why are the moose and deer pole dancing..." — Melanie Fox
"The beaver should be holding a BK burger and squash racket." — Stephen Ferris
"Why are there no Indigenous elements?" — Christine Benko
"The only thing I would suggest about improving the old one would be to add the bee or northern lights in the empty space of the field. This new one just seems too busy and omits any Indigenous influence." — Jasmine Large
"The original one is more crisp and professional looking." — Kayla Burke
"Fix the potholes before you waste this money." — Janet Homann
"The original one was fine, why change it? The City of Fort St John pays more per year on interest than on the principal of their debts. So until that changes, it is kind of ridiculous to spend money just to spend money." — Daniel Martin
"Coat of Arms aren't meant to be changed are they? Registered or not. Add some color it's part of the history here keep the original." — Paula March
