Ruby McBeth: Reading up on Peace history

If you are looking for local history, the Fort St. John North Peace Museum has a good selection of history book about our Peace area.
VE Brandl recently donated $3000 in support of the Fort St. John Seniors Hall during the Christmas holidays. Jill from VE Brandl dropped off the donation, and accepting on behalf of the Hall is Wendy Clayson (right).

If you are looking for local history, the Fort St. John North Peace Museum has a good selection of history book about our Peace area: Peace Makers of North Peace; Lure of the South Peace; A Community Tells Its Story (Cecil Lake); Goodlow History: Beyond the Ranch; Treasured Memories Old and New (Golata Creek Flatrock and area); The Story of Hudson’s Hope; and Pioneers of Sunrise and Two Rivers

They have no copies of The Valleys North of the Peace River Block (Buick to Prespatou). Both the Cecil Lake book and the Sunrise Two Rivers book were put out by the Women’s Institutes in their areas.

Heather at the museum tells me that they keep a list of people wanting books, so that if they get one donated, they can contact you and sell you the used book. She tells me that they have one used copy of Rolla Remembers. Because that book is out of print it is classified as a rare book and is expensive.

Some of these books (and many other local history books from other communities in Western Canada) are available digitally through the University of Calgary digital collections:

Christmas Letters

It is always good to hear from family and friends at Christmas. People seem to be weathering the storm. Jill Sutton says: “Winter here [in Port Hope, Ontario] is lacking snow – I miss the brightness of it.” Corinne Newman says: “Have enjoyed the home time - have done a lot of crafting.” Leslie Lindsay says: “We want to wish all a very blessed Christmas and, who knows, somewhere in 2022 a ‘mask free’ Happy New Year.”

Seniors Hall Update

Wendy Clayson of the Seniors Club wishes you all a Happy New Year. She says that due to COVID restrictions, social days on Tuesdays and Thursdays are suspended until Jan. 18. Bingo is also suspended. People are able to rent the hall for private gatherings and to do so can phone Wendy at 250-785-9193.

Those of you who were Mr. Bean fans will be intrigued to know that Rowan Atkinson has taken on the roll of Maigret in a T.V. series of that name. Perhaps enough time has gone by since we watched Bean that we will not expect this actor to be silly in this serious roll. It is on the Knowledge Network Saturdays at 10:00 p.m.

Quote of the Week

“The leading cause of injury in old men is them thinking they are still young men.” (Author unknown)
