Ruby McBeth: Recipe for happiness

This week the Fort St. John Hospital Auxiliary celebrates 90 years of serving our hospitals.

This week the Fort St. John Hospital Auxiliary celebrates 90 years of serving our hospitals. Rosemary Landry, a former nurse, is the leader of this group. Talking to Rosalie Brandl, I got a sense that the members of the group were like family to one another. They are proud of the help they have given to the hospital over the years and respect each other for the work they do co-operatively.

WI Month moment: sharing cooking tips

Sharing recipes is standard fare for Women’s Institutes and for the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). In fact, when the ACWW was being formed the French women were unsure if they would join because they did not want to share their recipes!

Locally Landry Branch (northeast of Dawson Creek) put out a cookbook for their 75th Anniversary in 2017. Patsy Nagel included a 10-page section on gluten-free baking. The BCWI put out a cookbook for B.C.’s centennial in 1958. Tumbler Ridge, Mackenzie, or Williston Lake did not show up on the map in the book and Chetwynd was still called Little Prairie.

A third cook book I found on my shelves is by the Kamloops District Women’s Institutes. Here is their recipe for happiness submitted by Letty Giacomuzi: “Take a heaping cup of patience, fold in a big heart full of love, and two hands full of generosity to all the ingredients above. Blend in a dash of laughter, and some understanding too. Sprinkle generously with kindness and happy memories, old and new. Add a lot of faith and mix well to make it rich and sweet. Then enjoy a heaping portion with everyone you meet.”

Birthday shopping spree

When we used to travel to Terrace to visit family, I would stop in to shop at the Vanderhoof Department Store. For my birthday this year I phoned the store and ordered enough items to feel as if I had had a shopping adventure. Great fun!

WI Woman of the Week

This week’s WI woman of the week is Joan Holthe. Joan is a member of the Doe River WI and past president of WI Canada. Joan has a gift for lightening the mood of a gathering which was a blessing during the pandemic. The wife of a cattle rancher Joan has been known to say: “I have to go. I need to help with the haying.”

Quote of the Week
