Memories of a St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl

In these COVID times it is nice to have memories to draw on. My favourite memory from my time with the Grande Prairie Pipe Band was the St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl.

Lorne recorded it in his diary for March 17, 2018: “-6 to +5 Pub Crawl in G.P. We went to G.P. at 11 a.m. Had lunch at Dawson and on to G.P. Checked into Paradise Inn. Ruby changed into band uniform and we went to Egan’s Pub. The band played at 5:30. We then went to Crown and Anchor and they played there. We went to Better Than Fred’s. We had supper there and then played and on to the Bat Cave – Ken Sergeant car collection. They played there then back to the hotel.”

If you have never been there, the Bat Cave is worth a visit. It is large building behind the GM Dealership with a collection of classic cars from 1958 to 2012 including the Batmobile. Lorne found an early Pontiac just like the first car he owned. Google “Bat Cave Grande Prairie” to see the cars - all in mint condition.

For the pub crawl we were decked out in Irish hats and shamrocks and were encouraged to wear green shirts.

Ireland then and now

As anyone over 60 knows Ireland has a troubled past. Their civil war (“The Troubles”) ended in 1998 with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement though the relationship between the nations is still complex.

Since the Good Friday agreement, the border has been open between North and South. With the passing of Brexit this is likely to change. Although the people of Northern Ireland like those of Scotland voted against Brexit, they are governed by the parliament of the United Kingdom, which passed Brexit. Thus, Northern Ireland is now out of the European Union while Ireland (the south) is still in.

This is a problem for farmers in the North who worked closely with the South especially in milk production and marketing. Also, the European Union subsidizes farmers. As you can see, Brexit is not a simple situation.

Irish Dance

To appreciate Irish Dance at its best:, google “Riverdance” or “Michael Flatley.” The foot work is incredible.

Quote of the Week
