I find it rather strange that Premier candidate Mike De Jong doesn't know why there is voter apathy in Canada. In many ridings it is well known who will be elected so why waste a trip to the polls.
Millions of Canadians that have faithfully voted for many years still have no representation. He mentions better voter turn out from the Australian model. I do not believe that is because they are required to vote by law. It is because they have PR (Proportional Representation). Everyone's vote counts. PR was not given a fair chance in B.C.
The media, backed by the governments and corporations that didn't want it,had many voters erroneously believing it was terribly complicated and impossible to understand.
I believe voter turn out would sky rocket with PR,We would have much better government and greatly reduce corruption as well. Lowering voter age is not a good idea. If a person does not have maturity and knowledge of the issues it is better that they do not vote.
Mr. De Jong calls the Liberals a free enterprise coalition. What they really are is a dictatorship governed by the unconscionable greed of huge corporations. Nothing could be less democratic than that. They are simply copying the U.S. where democracy has been dead for many years. He says the NDP are not free enterprise. Nothing could be farther from the truth and they are much more environmentally and fiscally responsible as well.
The Federal Conservatives and the B.C. Liberals are the most destructive, polluting, resource depleting, deficit building government we have ever had.
We have had billions of dollars of damage from bizarre weather events in Canada this year and trillions globally along with thousands of deaths.
The world can not afford these old business as usual, pollute just as much as you can governments any longer.
Our very survival on this planet is dependent on an immediate shift to governments that promote environmental responsibility and sustainability. Our young voters need to learn the truth, unfortunately that is a commodity many of our politicians do not possess.
